Every Christmas, we choose a grassroots project to support – this year we are helping out our old friends, Sonja and Elger Nieuwenhuis, who carry out an annual food distribution in South Sudan. Read on to find out more about the impact they are having on some of the poorest families in Juba, and how you can get involved.
Every year, Sonja and Elger - who have lived and worked in South Sudan for almost a decade - raise funds to buy food parcels for the very poorest families in their local community. These are families who have fallen between the cracks of the system, and who are struggling to get themselves out of the cycle of poverty.
This Christmas, Sonja and Elger will ensure 250 families don’t go hungry over the festive period. They will buy and distribute food parcels containing maize meal, salt, sugar, milk powder, biscuits, tea, brown beans, charcoal, soap and sunflower oil. Each parcel costs just €7.50 (£6.60).
If you would like to support this fantastic initiative, get involved in our annual drive to send Christmas cards…Social Enterprise style! Instead of selling cards to raise funds for ourselves, we will be giving them away and will donate one food parcel for every Aid Works christmas card that is sent. So if you receive one of these cards (featuring artwork by the youngest member of the Aid Works team!), get on facebook or twitter and tell us about it!
Wishing you and yours a safe and peaceful Christmas, from everyone in the Aid Works team.
